The letter below was written by the Mellott family and was read during a dedication of the memorial bench for their son, Lucien, who tragically passed away six years ago. The dedication of the bench took place at the City Park on Friday, September 7, 2018.
Hello and welcome,
First of all, we'd like to thank you all for coming. As I look around, I see family, friends, soccer family, and members of the community. Tonight's gathering is to celebrate the life of our youngest son Lucien, who was taken from us way too soon. During the time of his death and the weeks following, all of you in one way or another gathered around us, loved us, cried with us, supported us, brought us food, called, visited, and just made sure we were doing OK. For that. we are forever grateful. And all of you being here tonight just shows us that you are STILL here for us 6+ years later.
This bench is our way of being near our son and a place to come to visit him. You see, he may have only been 3-years old when he passed, but he spent many hours at this park watching his two older siblings, Jacob and Hannah, play their soccer games. He has played on this playground, his small little feet have run across this grass, from one end to the other. That is why we asked for our donations to go to Edwardsville Parks & Rec. Yes, it took some time to get it accomplished, but now it is done and he will forever be remembered by all who come and sit on this bench. This park is a huge part of our lives, from watching soccer games, coaching my own team, with Brandon as one of my players, and co-coaching softball and baseball, we have spent a lot of time here and felt this was a great place for everyone to be able to come and remember Lucien.
Joe and I would like to give a special 'thank you' to Mike Martin, Zack Daniel, and other members of the Edwardsville City Council and Parks & Rec Advisory Board, and to the guys at Atmos who donated the concrete and their time for the bench slab. Thank you for helping us get this memorial bench done and for giving our family some closure and another step in healing our grief.
We are thankful for all of you and we appreciate you all gathering here with us tonight. We love you and greatly appreciate each and everyone of you. Thank you for coming.
Joe, Michelle, Jacob, Hannah, and Brandon
