The U.S. Census Bureau is ending all counting efforts for the 2020 census on Sept. 30, a month sooner than previously announced, the bureau’s director confirmed Monday in a statement. That includes critical door-knocking efforts and collecting responses online, over the phone and, by mail.
As of August 3, Edwardsville had a reported response rate of 64.8%, slightly down from the state’s overall response rate of 66.8%. It is critical for communities to have an accurate census count in order to maintain funding for programs like free and reduced lunch, seeking federal aide, and having an appropriate number of congressional representatives. An undercount in the region similar to 2010 could cost Wyandotte County over $4.5 million in federal dollars over the next ten years.
